North Korea's deputy chief nuclear envoy arrived in Beijing on Tuesday amid diplomatic efforts to resume long-stalled talks on the North's nuclear program, with a diplomatic source saying she appears to be en route to a third country for a secret meeting with U.S. officials.
Choe Son-hui, deputy director-general of the North American affairs bureau of the North's foreign ministry who serves as deputy chief to the six-party talks, headed to the North Korean embassy shortly after arriving at the Beijing airport earlier in the day, without responding to questions from journalists.
A diplomatic source in Beijing who is familiar with the matter said, "There is talk that Deputy Director-General Choe would soon leave for a third country and make contact with the U.S. side."
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the possible meeting between Choe and U.S. officials as part of back channel exchanges between the countries.
Choe's visit to Beijing came three days after China's top nuclear envoy, Wu Dawei, ended his five-day trip to Pyongyang.
